Heavy Rain Floods More Than 100 Ahmedabad Locations

Ahmedabad recorded 88mm of rain by Monday evening, flooding more than 100 locations, disrupting underpasses and prompting civic response measures.

Ahmedabad received an average 88mm of rain by 8pm Monday, while rainfall in the 24 hours ending 6am was 43mm; the seasonal tally reached 82%. More than 100 locations reported knee-deep water, generating 64 waterlogging complaints. Flooded areas included Sindhu Bhavan Road, Judges Bungalow Road, SG Highway Service Road, 132 Feet Ring Road, Vastrapur Lake-to-Himalaya Mall stretch and Helmet Circle. Rainfall totals included Sarkhej 144mm, Vatva 143mm, Bopal 135mm, Jodhpur 123mm, Bodakdev and Dudheshwar 119mm each, and Maninagar 101mm. AMC received 23 complaints about fallen trees and two about dangerous structures. Of 89 complaints, 34 were addressed and work on the others began. Underpasses were shut, pumps deployed and Vasna barrage gates opened.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation approved ₹8.17 crore to redevelop Hebatpur and Mumatpura lakes with water-conservation measures and recreational facilities.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) approved ₹8.17 crore for lake redevelopment: ₹3.86 crore at Hebatpur Lake in Thaltej and ₹4.31 crore at Mumatpura Lake in Jodhpur. The AMC Water Committee-led project includes lake deepening, stormwater lines to channel rainwater and recharge groundwater, shaft wells for rainwater storage, and removal of silt for reuse in gardening. Stone walls and fencing will address soil erosion and encroachments. Landscaping will include trees, flower gardens and walking tracks, alongside gym equipment, seating and children’s play zones. Each lake will have a small central island, inspired by Kankaria’s Naginawadi, with benches, gazebos and shaded seating for senior citizens. Work is set to begin soon.
