Sangam Vihar Sewer Work Delayed, Phase Two Targeted for 2027

Hindustan Times · · Infrastructure

Delhi Jal Board told the NGT that forest restrictions and pending permissions have delayed Sangam Vihar sewer work, with substantial Phase II completion targeted by March 2027.

Key facts
  • Delhi Jal Board (DJB) told the National Green Tribunal that sewer-network work in Sangam Vihar under the Delhi Sewage Master Plan-2031 was delayed by forest-land construction restrictions and pending road-cutting permissions. The project was divided into two phases because of complex ground conditions.
  • Phase II sewer lines are complete in eight colonies unaffected by forest encroachments. Work began in 14 others; 11 are partly on forest land, including pockets of L, C, D and F-3 blocks. Lines were laid only outside forest areas, and work in the 11 colonies is about 25% complete. DJB targets completion by March 2027.
  • Of three remaining Phase II colonies, one is complete. Work in two colonies in Durga Vihar and Deoli Extension is stalled by public hindrance and local resistance.
  • Peripheral trunk lines along major roads intercept sewage in storm-water drains and connect to the network on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, then to the 170-million-gallons-per-day Okhla sewage treatment plant.
  • Phase I lines have been laid in Shiv Park, Jawahar Park, Krishna Park Extension, Tigri Extension and Deoli Extension. A balance-work contract awarded in May 2018 was terminated in September 2022; a fresh ₹31.31-crore work order was issued in November 2025.
DJB to Turn Disputed Jal Vihar Bungalow Into Training Centre

Hindustan Times · · Residential

Delhi Jal Board will use a disputed 700-square-metre Jal Vihar bungalow as a training centre for engineers and human resource officials.

Key facts

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will convert a bungalow in southeast Delhi’s Jal Vihar into a training centre for engineers and human resource officials. The decision was approved at DJB’s 174th board meeting on Friday, water minister Parvesh Verma said. The bungalow has been unoccupied since September 2023.

Former DJB CEO Udit Prakash Rai allegedly ordered the demolition of a 15th-century monument to build the residence. The Archaeological Survey of India’s list described the site as a “Mahal” built during Delhi’s Sayyid rule in 1418. A vigilance show-cause notice issued in April 2023 said Rai was responsible for the demolition and had breached accommodation norms: he was entitled to a Type V government house of 403 sqm, but the bungalow measured 700 sqm. Construction cost nearly ₹4 crore. The Union home ministry suspended Rai on July 31, 2023, and ordered him to vacate; he and his family left in September. Other officers declined the house. DJB had considered a laboratory-cum-training centre and a guesthouse before choosing its training-centre use.

Delhi High Court Orders Urgent Replacement of Contaminated Water Pipes

The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure

The Delhi High Court ordered the Jal Board to replace deteriorated pipes after residents in east Delhi colonies received sewage-contaminated drinking water.

Key facts

The Delhi High Court reprimanded the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) over sewage-contaminated drinking water supplied to Yojana Vihar, Anand Vihar, Jagriti Enclave and nearby areas. A public interest litigation filed by advocate Dhruv Gupta raised health concerns. On July 2, the court ordered an on-ground inspection. The DJB reported that Yojana Vihar’s water network, installed 35 years ago, was beyond its functional lifespan; pipelines and household connections were severely damaged and required urgent replacement.

The DJB planned to issue replacement tenders by July 7 and award a contract by July 17. Work was expected to finish within 20 days of finalising the contract. The court directed completion around affected homes by August 2025 and warned delays would be treated seriously. Desilting of adjoining sewage treatment infrastructure was underway and expected to finish by August. The next hearing is scheduled for August 13.
