The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), with local police and bulldozers, began a demolition drive on November 24, 2025, around Isanpur Lake. The operation covers more than 1,000 structures: 167 commercial units were removed before Diwali, and the current phase targets 925 unauthorised residential structures.

AMC deputy commissioner Riddhesh Raval said the lake occupies 96,000 square metres of government land, of which 28,800 square metres—nearly 30%—is encroached. AMC issued notices twice and collected documents from eligible residents for possible housing-scheme assistance, subject to verification and cut-off dates.

Officials said encroachments blocked the lake’s natural spread and affected restoration plans. AMC intends to revive city lakes for flood control and public access. The Gujarat High Court rejected a petition challenging the demolition notice, ruling that construction is impermissible on a declared water body under Section 37 of the Gujarat Land Revenue Code, 1879.

Some structures had been demolished by afternoon. The operation is expected to take two to three days. Nearly 80% of occupants moved with their belongings during the preceding week, while the remainder were moving on November 24. A deployment of 550 police personnel and drone-assisted patrols was in place.

This was Ahmedabad’s second major demolition drive after encroachments on nearly 1.25 lakh square metres around Chandola lake in Danilimda were cleared in April.

The AMC had initially demolished 167 commercial structures and issued notices to the residential properties before the monsoon. The drive, originally scheduled for November 20, was delayed after residents requested four more days and because of Diwali.

Eight Hitachi machines, eight JCBs, 550 police personnel and 500 AMC staff are deployed. Ten residents approached the High Court, which gave them time to resolve the matter with municipal authorities.

Isanpur Lake covers 55,000 square metres and is Ahmedabad’s third-largest lake, after Chandola Lake and Kankaria Lake. In May, the AMC demolished more than 400 illegally constructed structures in Bapunagar.

Construction of Rs 197.98 crore, 2.5km Naroda Patiya flyover stalled due to forest department objections. Project alignment requires felling 146 trees on 1.3 hectare of forest land between Naroda Patiya and Devi Cinema. Design adjustments saved 68 trees. Forest norms require replacement land elsewhere in state. AMC proposed allotting 1.3 hectare in Isanpur town planning scheme to forest department to secure clearance and resume work. Standing committee to take up proposal.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans a 100 MLD water treatment plant at Raska to meet growing demand in the city’s eastern region. It will acquire 27,516 sq. m of government land in Chavalj village, Daskroi taluka, allocating ₹1.88 crore for acquisition.

The plant is intended to serve developing areas from Vastral and Ode to Kamod, and those parallel to the SP Ring Road. Raska currently has a 200 MLD plant supplying Vastral, Ramol, Hathijan, Lambha, Isanpur and Vatv. AMC had initially planned a 200 MLD plant for the eastern and southern zones, but is considering an additional 100 MLD capacity, supported by the 300 MLD head regulator on the Shedhi branch canal at Raska.
