The proposed overbridge at Maninagar railway crossing in Ahmedabad faces planning delays as the Railways and Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) disagree on design. A joint meeting on Thursday ended without consensus.

Proposals differ: Railways propose an 850-metre-long, three-lane overbridge; AMC suggests a two-lane structure to reduce property impacts.

Mahinagar crossing is a major traffic bottleneck, closed for significant periods daily due to frequent trains. Residents have long demanded an overbridge or underpass.

Property acquisition is the key contention point. Railways' preliminary survey estimates around 260 residential and commercial properties would be acquired. AMC officials believe the actual impact is significantly higher—more than 500 properties when accounting for partial demolitions that render remaining structures unusable.

To minimise displacement and damage, AMC proposes the two-lane alternative.

No consensus was reached at the joint meeting. Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel confirmed Railways' 260-property estimate but noted partial demolition often leaves entire properties unusable. AMC has instructed officials to conduct a detailed survey to assess actual property damage and displacement.

While commuters demand traffic relief, affected property owners have raised objections over demolitions.

Project cost estimated at ₹100 crore, to be jointly funded 50–50 between Railways and AMC. This would be Ahmedabad's first railway overbridge project where Railways bear half the construction cost.

The overbridge is part of the Central Government's broader initiative to eliminate railway level crossings and improve road connectivity.

Five precast-prestressed portal beams successfully installed over Ahmedabad–Vadodara railway line at Maninagar in 22 days. Installation sequence: April 8, 13, 19, 24, 29. Each beam weighed 1,170–1,360 MT; heaviest (1,360 MT) on April 8. Beams measure 34 metres long, 5.5 by 4.5 metre cross-section. Span between piers: 30–34 metres. 2,200 MT crawler crane deployed for first time over active Indian Railways tracks. Installation time: 3.5 hours per beam versus previous 9-hour blocks. Beams span UP, DOWN, and third railway lines. Project challenges: skewed geometry, limited working space, overhead electrification, ongoing train movement. 508 km corridor executed by National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited. Station plaza contracts awarded at Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara. Expected operations: August 15, significantly reducing Mumbai–Ahmedabad travel time.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation recorded 672,785 visitors at Kankaria Lakefront from April 27 to June 3, 2026. Located in Maninagar in southern Ahmedabad, the attraction draws visitors from Gujarat, across India and abroad.

The lakefront was redeveloped into a public space in 2008 and inaugurated on December 25 that year by Narendra Modi, then Gujarat chief minister. The redevelopment added modern amenities, public spaces, and cultural and recreational attractions.

Tourism-related visitor spending supports local hospitality, food and retail businesses and creates livelihood opportunities. Tourism and culture are focus sectors for the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference for Central Gujarat, scheduled for June 29 and 30 at Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals University in Vadodara.
