Kolkata Municipal Corporation plans to build a 40-million-gallon-per-day water treatment plant at Garden Reach for south Kolkata areas where residents, particularly high-rise occupants, rely on groundwater. The proposal followed requests from high-rise residents; about 10 lakh people are expected to benefit.
Garden Reach’s six existing plants produce 210 million gallons daily, serving south Kolkata, suburbs near EM Bypass, and Pujali and Maheshtala municipalities. The proposed plant will focus on areas dependent on tubewells and high-rises that applied for safe water. Applicants are mainly in Behala, Joka, Tollygunge, Jadavpur, Garia, Chetla and Rashbehari Avenue.
Merlin Laurel Garden in Purba Barisha, Behala, has 96 flats across six towers in three blocks. Genexx Valley in Joka has 1,875 flats and 6,000 residents; residents there rely entirely on groundwater.
