Delhi Police filed an FIR against unknown persons for negligence related to fire safety and acts endangering life following a fire that destroyed over 30 shops at Dilli Haat on 30 April 2025. Fire officials said preliminary findings point to an electrical fault or short circuit starting from Shop No. 13 near Gate 2. First reports came around 8:30pm; fire tenders arrived by 9pm and took two hours to douse the flames. Over 1,000 people were present. No injuries reported. Shopkeepers reported losses: Shauket Ahmed (pashmina worth ₹1 crore, ₹2 lakh rent paid), Ajaiz Hussain (garments worth ₹80 lakh, each lehenga takes 5 months to produce), Vijay Kumar (Madhubani paintings worth ₹10–50 lakh). Multiple fire extinguishers failed or were jammed. Shopkeepers blamed the Delhi Tourism Department for sealing the back emergency exit, replacing it with stalls, reducing ventilation and escape routes. Dilli Haat spans six acres with 166 stalls showcasing crafts and cuisine from across India, with ~150,000 daily footfall. Established in 1994 with 62 stalls; food stalls increased from 25 to nearly 30. Deputy commissioner of police registered FIR under BNS sections 287 (negligence with respect to fire) and 125 (act endangering life). Tourism minister Kapil Mishra promised compensation and stall reallocation.
