Daulat Nagar Residents Allege Forced Evictions and Illegal Demolitions

Residents of Thane’s Daulat Nagar society allege forced evictions, unauthorized demolitions and unpaid rent compensation amid a stalled redevelopment dispute.

  • The 205 families, mostly senior citizens, from Daulat Nagar Cooperative Housing Society’s 14 buildings in Thane East have lived in nearby rented homes since leaving from January. The ground-plus-three-floor buildings cover one lakh sq ft and contain 187 flats and 18 shops.
  • Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) classified the buildings C1 in 2017, but a 150-page audit by a TMC-empanelled auditor rated them C2 in 2024, meaning they could be saved with major repairs. Four builders were appointed and removed before the society signed a development agreement with Yash Ashok on April 7, 2022.
  • Residents allege the TMC cut water, electricity and gas in December 2024 to force evictions. Two buildings were demolished that month, allegedly without an order or notice; Deputy Municipal Commissioner Shankar Patole, who residents say ordered the demolitions, was arrested on corruption charges on October 3. All residents had left by April; redevelopment has not begun, and most say transit rent is unpaid. One resident pays ₹28,000 monthly rent.
  • Ninety-one residents are challenging the conversion to cluster redevelopment in court, alleging it was done without informing members. Residents say cluster redevelopment allows seven flats per existing flat, versus three under general redevelopment.
  • Activist Anjali Damania said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde promised to examine cancelling the developer’s Letter of Intent and handing the project to another developer. On October 17, 2025, some residents received ₹1 lakh rent-compensation cheques.
Parapet Collapse Kills Woman at Dangerous Thane Building

A parapet collapsed at Lucky Compound in Daulat Nagar, killing one woman and seriously injuring another; the civic body had declared the building dangerous.

At 12:36 am on Tuesday, part of a top-floor parapet collapsed from the four-storey D-wing building at Lucky Compound, Daulat Nagar, Mumbra, and struck two women walking on the road. The building was about 25 years old. Nahid Jainuddin Jamali was declared dead at Bilal Hospital; her daughter-in-law, Ilma Zehra Jamali, was injured and treated at Kalsekar Hospital. Both lived at Sana Tower in the locality. Thane Municipal Corporation had classified the building as dangerous under C2B; all homes were vacated and the premises sealed. Fire, disaster-management and Mumbra ward teams removed the dangerous parapet section and unstable window grill. A 2013 collapse at Lucky Compound killed 74 people and injured more than 60.
