Six-lane widening of NH-44 between Bowenpally and Kallakal near Hyderabad has stalled after the contractor withdrew. NHAI invited fresh tenders for about 21 km of remaining work, including four flyovers, five vehicle underpasses, one railway overbridge and service roads; the deadline is 18 months from commencement, but contractors have not bid, saying the contract is unviable.

Administrative approval was granted on March 15, 2022, and construction began on August 1, 2022. Lakshmi Infrastructure and Developers India Pvt Ltd was awarded the work, approved at ₹521.23 crore and originally due for completion in July 2024. By June 2026, about 50% was complete, representing roughly ₹256 crore of work. The stalled works were tendered at an estimated cost of over ₹414 crore.

The wider corridor includes about 10 km between Bowenpally and Gundlapochampalli and 17 km between Gundlapochampalli and Kallakal. Service roads, drainage, junctions and associated works remain unfinished. Thousands of vehicles travelling daily toward Medak, Nizamabad, Kamareddy and Adilabad use the route. NHAI is responsible for construction and oversight; land acquisition and utility-shifting costs have not been fully disclosed.

Bowenpally playground in Secunderabad Cantonment is set to lose nearly half an acre for an elevated corridor under H-CITI. The development follows partial loss of Trimulgherry football ground. Local sports groups and youngsters have raised concerns about shrinking practice spaces.

Other infrastructure impacts in the area:

• Over 400 trees felled at Bollarum for SCB elevated corridor from Gymkhana Grounds to near Shamirpet.
• Proposed alternative roads around AOC Circle delayed due to pending Defence land transfer; Rs 960-crore project requires nearly 42 acres.
• BRS demanding 6,000 Indiramma houses on eight acres in Survey No. 157/1 in Secunderabad Cantonment.
• Approximately 650 families in Ambedkar Huts received demolition warnings with 15-day vacate notices.

The corridor being developed by HMDA at Rs 1,487 crore comprises 3.095-km elevated stretch, 1.705-km at-grade section, and 600-metre tunnel under Begumpet airport. Expected completion within 36 months.

Status:

• Flyover section: 18 of 20 pillars completed with 18 erected; 6 pillar caps finished
• Stretch-II: 7 foundations and 3 pillars of planned 90 completed; 33 girders cast

Corridor passes through Secunderabad, Tadbund, Bowenpally, terminating at Dairy Farm Road. Tunnel to run from Race Course bus stop under airport, surfacing near Ahle Sunnat-Wa-Jamat graveyard.

More than 1.5 lakh commuters use the NH-44 corridor daily amid unfinished and staggered construction of the Paradise-to-Dairy Farm (Suchitra) Elevated Corridor. Work on the Suchitra-Kompally section has been suspended for over a year after contractors went to court over financial and contractual disputes. Work began in July 2022, with completion targeted for June 2026. The Paradise-to-Bowenpally flyover is in its final phase, but narrowed lanes, dug-up service roads, potholes and diversions cause congestion.

Traffic police opened U-turns between pillars 35–36 for Suchitra-bound traffic and 21–22 for Alwal-bound commuters. A bottleneck remains between pillars 28–29 and pillar 16 on the Bowenpally-to-Alwal stretch, where a culvert narrows the road; disruptions of 30–45 seconds can trigger long queues. Alwal traffic police deploy extra personnel daily from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; NHAI and project agencies monitor construction. Seven identified black spots recorded 50 accidents and 53 fatalities from 2022 to 2025.

HMDA issued Request for Proposals for elevated corridor-cum-tunnel between Paradise and Dairy Farm Road under EPC turnkey system. Scope includes survey, investigation, detailed design, drawings, and construction of elevated corridor and tunnels with all components. Cost of utility shifting (water pipelines, electrical poles) on 5.4km corridor will be borne by HMDA. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy laid foundation on March 8. Six-lane corridor on National Highway 44 will fly over Tadbund and Bowenpally junctions and circumvent Begumpet airport via 600-metre tunnel. Tunnel construction limited to night time with Airports Authority of India coordination; approval recently granted. Expected to resolve chronic traffic congestion for city commuters and National Highway 44 travellers.
