Shriram Properties is assessing development opportunities in Kolkata, including Rajarhat and Alipore, through possible joint ventures with local landowners. Each potential project is expected to have a gross development value of ₹5–6 billion.

The Bengaluru-based developer entered Bengal by acquiring 314 acres in Uttarpara from Hindustan Motors. After land-related disputes, it transferred 42 acres to the state government, resolving the issues in February. Shriram has completed or undertaken 6 million sq ft at Uttarpara, including apartment towers, villas and plotted bungalows.

It retains 147 acres for development during the rest of the decade and expects to invest ₹40 billion in the next phase. The remaining township is planned to add 7–10 million sq ft, including more homes, a mall, office complex, senior-living project, school and hospital. Separate operators will run the mall, school and hospital. Strong demand for premium homes led Shriram to retain the land for in-house development; Uttarpara remains central to its Bengal strategy.

• The National Land Monetization Corporation (NLMC) has invited international bids from empanelled International Property Consultancy firms to monetise BSNL’s 52,178-square-metre freehold property at 248 AJC Bose Road, Alipore, Kolkata. It includes 10,014 square metres of heritage buildings and is owned for “Dwelling house.”
• The site is bounded by AJC Bose Road to the north, Tolly Canal to the south, Police Training School to the east and Alipore Road to the west. The administration/engineering building, plant and shed, and security rest room were built in 1947; the substation and boundary wall date to 1982.
• The factory, formerly producing telecom equipment, now mainly makes PLB pipes for optical fibre cable installations. Production will shift to BSNL’s Kharagpur unit, and Alipore will cease operations once a bidder is finalised. BSNL’s Gopalpur factory has closed.
• Earlier efforts to sell BSNL properties in Barrackpore and Madhyamgram failed after multiple rounds without bidders. The Alipore site is near Kolkata airport, a railway station and a bus terminus. Kolkata real estate players consider it suitable for mixed-use development. Its estimated market value is about ₹1,900 crore; plots here reportedly sell for ₹3 crore per cottah.

• Monsoon rain has left Kolkata roads with potholes, cracked asphalt and hazardous craters, causing traffic snarls and accident risks.
• Affected routes include EM Bypass, Park Circus Connector and DH Road. Commuters report delays between Kasba and Science City; two-wheelers are avoiding the service road near PC Gardens.
• Lalbazar sent the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) a list of roads needing repairs. An SOS was issued for DH Road between Pathakpara and Ekbalpore, Bardhaman Road in Alipore, Strand Road near Howrah Bridge and the Panchannagram stretch of EM Bypass.
• Repairs have stalled because of incessant rain. Gariahat flyover, Mominpore and Ranikuthi also have damaged stretches.

A direct private AC bus service from Naihati to Joka began on Monday, August 17, 2026, with 10 buses. The route was inaugurated Sunday at Naihati bus terminus by transport minister Arjun Singh, with Naihati MLA Sumitra Chatterjee present. The 75-km route runs via Shyamnagar, Barrackpore, Sodepur, Dunlop, Dakshineswar, the airport, Chinar Park, Karunamoyee, Biswa Bangla Gate, Tata Medical Center, Chingrighata, Park Circus 7-Point, Minto Park, Alipore Zoo and Behala. Two more buses may join soon. The buses previously operated on an app-based service before seeking State Transport Authority permission for commercial operations. The feed description gives fares of ₹25–₹135 and departures every 30 minutes from 7:30am.
