Mumbai Restricts Heavy Vehicles on Kandivali’s Akurli Road

Mumbai Traffic Police barred heavy vehicles from Akurli Road between 8am and 9pm, aiming to ease congestion and improve emergency access.

Mumbai Traffic Police restricted heavy vehicles on the Sant Dnyaneshwar Chowk–Western Express Highway stretch, popularly known as Akurli Road in Kandivali, from February 23, 2026. The order, issued by additional commissioner of police (traffic) Priyanka Narnaware, bars them from 8am to 9pm, except vehicles providing essential and necessary services.

Residents had complained for months about congestion and delayed emergency response. They blamed heavy vehicles linked to a Mahindra tractor manufacturing unit, alongside a road divider, construction and an earlier right-turn closure. An ambulance was reportedly stuck for 15 to 20 minutes during a medical emergency earlier in February.

The Samta Nagar traffic division said the factory has a designated entrance and exit from the Western Express Highway and has been urged to use them. A similar restriction imposed last year was not renewed after compliance improved; heavy-vehicle traffic later increased. We All Connect has pursued the issue for over two years. Lokhandwala residents welcomed the order but called for consistent enforcement, particularly during peak hours.

Lokhandwala Residents’ Association asked Mumbai Traffic Police to stop horizontal bike parking on Akurli Road in Hanuman Nagar, Kandivali East, citing congestion and pedestrian difficulties.

Lokhandwala Residents’ Association (LRA) of Kandivali East wrote to the Samata Nagar Traffic Division seeking bike parking parallel to the footpath on Akurli Road. Residents face difficulty crossing a 100-metre stretch from Ambedkar Chowk to Banarasi Hotel because bikes parked horizontally from Lalit Restaurant and Nityanand Restaurant to Banarasi Hotel occupy a third of the road width. Rickshaws making U-turns at Banarasi Junction because the Roads Department has not completed installation of a parabolic divider add to congestion. LRA said earlier requests to restaurants to organise the parking had failed. Founder Shishir Vivekanand Shetty said traffic in-charge Jagdish Bhopale’s team took cognisance and began implementing a process within two days of receiving the letter. The association said it was not seeking to invoke the Akurli Road traffic notification, while stressing that businesses should not cause daily discomfort to residents and commuters. The Akurli Subway widening under the Western Express Highway had eased travel from Akurli Road.
