Chromepet residents complain of damaged roads in Chennai

  • S.M. Govindarajan, president of the United Federation of Residents’ Welfare Association, said Pachayappa Nagar near Abhirami Thirumana Koodam is “practically an accident zone” because of poor road condition.
  • He said bikers have skidded on the stretch and that Zone 3 no longer has a chairman, leaving neighbourhoods to fend for themselves.
  • Residents said several roads relaid before the pandemic were of subpar quality and deteriorated quickly.
  • Prabhakar, a resident of Chitlapakkam who commutes via Old Hasthinapuram Main Road, said roads need to withstand rain and that even smaller roads have poorly placed speed breakers.
  • Residents said the roads are especially difficult for senior citizens and children attending nearby schools.
  • Social activist Santhanam V. said the civic body should focus on road quality before the monsoon, and that roads should last longer than six months.

Heavy rain flooded several south Chennai neighbourhoods, while residents blamed poor stormwater drains for recurring waterlogging and reported sewage overflow in Thiruvanmiyur.

Rainfall since Friday night inundated Ram Nagar, Murugu Nagar and AGS Colony in Velachery, and Sadhasivam Nagar and Ram Nagar South in Madipakkam. Several AGS Colony streets had knee-deep water; residents said flooding had reached parking areas, while water previously entered ground-floor homes during Cyclone Michaung. Corporation pumps were removing water, but overflowing Veerangal Odai slowed recession. Water entered homes in Murugu Nagar, almost all Ram Nagar streets were waterlogged, and Madipakkam Main Road was difficult for motorists. Ram Nagar South residents blamed persistent flooding on incomplete, poorly designed stormwater drains that direct water uphill despite complaints during construction. Flooding submerged a resident’s two-wheeler and damaged household belongings; the landlord reduced rent by Rs 2,000, but repair costs ran to several thousand rupees. Perungudi and Alandur roads also flooded. Sewage overflowed outside Sri Ramachandra Convention Centre in Vasudeva Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur; a resident blamed food-waste dumping from the wedding hall for clogging an inadequate sewer system. The area had also flooded in December 2023. Metro Water staff arrived to clean it.
