Delhi plans to widen the congested, encroached four-lane Najafgarh peripheral road to six lanes, improving links with Haryana, especially Bahadurgarh and Gurugram. The road’s effective one-way width has fallen from about 30 feet to 20–25 feet at several points. UTTIPEC cleared the at-grade widening plan; a flyover was rejected because it would require acquiring hundreds of private properties. Widening is expected to meet projected traffic demand through 2038 and forms part of a plan to decongest 77 Delhi roads.

The project proposes a footpath, cycle lane and green zone, removal of encroachments, land acquisition where needed, and relocation of electricity poles, street furniture and some high-tension wires. Parking is planned at Najafgarh market, Dhansa Bus Stand, near Najafgarh police station and at key junctions: 25 spaces near Dhansa Bus Stand, 35 near the police station, 30 opposite it and 70 near the Dhansa-Bahadurgarh Road junction, plus a parking area at the Dhansa-Najafgarh junction.

Heavy commercial vehicles would be diverted from Phirni Road via improved links to Najafgarh Bypass and UER-II. The corridor serves Dwarka, Matiala, Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Janakpuri and Tilak Nagar, with traffic toward Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and Gurugram. Officials also proposed exploring relocation of some bus depots.

Delhi’s Public Works Department has started preparing the detailed project report for a ₹453.95 crore, 1-kilometre-long road network along both sides of the Najafgarh drain. Officials plan to visit the entire stretch. Work is expected to begin in May 2026 and finish by November 2027.

The corridor will include tree planting, landscaping and street lighting. It is intended to ease congestion, improve links between rural Delhi and arterial roads, and provide an alternative intra-city route. Areas expected to benefit include Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Goyla Dairy, Dwarka, Baprola, Nilothi, Paschim Vihar, Rajouri Garden and Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Delhi’s finance expenditure committee, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved a ₹454-crore project to build a two-lane road corridor along both banks of the Najafgarh drain, with completion scheduled for November 2027. It is intended to reduce pressure on arterial roads, travel time, fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, while improving links between urban and rural areas.

A 5.9-km stretch will run along the left bank from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge. From Chhawla to Basaidarapur, roads will be built on both sides for 27.4 km, bringing the total developed length across the banks to 60.7 km. The corridor will connect with Outer Ring Road at Keshopur, Inner Ring Road at Basaidarapur, Pankha Road at Vikaspuri, Najafgarh Road at Kakrola and UER-II at Dhulsiras. It will also intersect Shivaji Marg and link to NH-9/Rohtak Road, IGI Airport and Dwarka Expressway.

Expected beneficiaries include residents of Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Goyla Dairy, Dwarka, Baprola, Nilothi, Paschim Vihar and Rajouri Garden. Connectivity to Gurgaon's Sectors 104 and 110 is also expected to improve.

Delhi’s Finance Expenditure Committee approved ₹453.95 crore to develop a 60.77-km corridor along the Najafgarh Drain: a two-lane road on the left bank from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge (5.94 km), and roads on both sides from Chhawla to Basaidarapur (54.83 km). The route will connect with the Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, Pankha Road, UER-II, Najafgarh Road and other routes. Connections at Basaidarapur, Keshopur, Vikaspuri, Kakrola and Dhulsiras will link to the Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Pankha Road, Najafgarh Road and UER-II, providing access to the airport and Dwarka Expressway. It will serve areas including Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Chhawla, Goyla Dairy, Dwarka, Baprola, Nilothi, Paschim Vihar and Rajouri Garden, and improve links to Gurugram Sectors 104 and 110. Plans include walking, jogging and cycling tracks, a bridge near Dwarka Metro Depot, landscaping, tree planting, lighting, signboards and drainage. Administrative approvals are targeted by March 2026, tendering by April, construction from May and completion by November 2027. The project has technical committee and Flood Control Board approval.

Delhi’s Irrigation and Flood Control Department approved ₹453.95 crore to build rigid-pavement service roads on both banks of the Najafgarh Drain. The 57-km stretch, between Jhatikra and Basaidarapur, is expected to become an alternative mobility corridor serving Najafgarh, Matiala, Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri and adjoining areas, easing pressure on arterial roads and improving industrial connectivity. Officials will examine further widening and the feasibility of an elevated corridor along downstream sections.

The department approved an Expression of Interest for desilting the Najafgarh Drain using advanced dredging systems, hydraulic machinery and amphibious excavators. A bathymetric survey found more than 91 lakh cubic metres of accumulated silt; the work is expected to improve carrying capacity and reduce monsoon waterlogging.

A feasibility study was approved for an elevated road along Trunk Drain No. 1 in East Delhi. Other works include remodelling the Kailash Nagar Drain, rebuilding damaged boundary walls and beautifying the Shahdara Link Drain. The 39th Board meeting, chaired by Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh, was held after nearly 10 years.
