Unkal Lake Adds Adventure Sports After Smart City Refurbishment

Unkal Lake in Hubballi has reopened boating and added adventure activities after Smart City-funded restoration and weed removal.

Hubballi’s historic Unkal Lake, spread over 260 acres, was cleaned under Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City Limited’s project, costing ₹15 crore in phase one and ₹28 crore in phase two. A walking path and visitor facilities were added.

Boating resumed after weed removal and has operated for four months. Motor boats, pedal boats, jet skis, speed boats and kayaking were inaugurated last September by Union minister Pralhad Joshi. Sky cycle, rope cycle, zipline, trackless toy train and jungle bounce have been installed; the activities were expected to commence the following week. HDMC floated a tender to maintain the lake park and adventure sports, requiring the contractor to pay ₹10 lakh. Om Water Sports operates the activities and planned a special school package.

Unkal Lake Opens Water and Adventure Sports Facilities

Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation began maintaining Unkal Lake after its Smart Cities-funded cleanup and development, opening boating, jet-ski, kayaking and other facilities.

Key facts

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurated water and adventure sports at Unkal Lake in Hubballi on September 28, 2025. Cleaned, beautified and developed under the Smart Cities project, the lake is now maintained by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC). Facilities include motor boating, pandal boating, jet-ski, speed boating and kayaking.

MLA Mahesh Tenginkai said efforts are underway to develop Hubballi as a tourism hub. Gardens are planned across the city using CSR or other funds; a Zipway watersports facility and an additional boat for night operations are also planned. A ropeway is planned on Nrupatunga Betta. Mayor Jyothi Patil, Deputy Mayor Santosh Chavan and Municipal Commissioner Rudresh Gali attended.
