Thiruneermalai Road in Chennai faces poor conditions from underground drainage work and severe traffic congestion at the GST Road junction during peak hours.

Thiruneermalai Main Road links residential localities of Tambaram Corporation and industrial units in Pammal and Thirumudivakkam. Heavy traffic congestion occurs during morning and evening rush hours at the Thiruneermalai Road-GST Road junction. Leather units on the road generate heavy vehicle movement daily. Traffic police have installed temporary medians and cut right turns from Thiruneermalai Road towards GST Road with limited effect. Road condition deteriorated due to underground drainage (UGD) project digging by Tambaram Corporation in Pampal and Anakaputhur. Evening traffic choked by heavy vehicles and buses transporting industrial employees from Thirumudivakkam and Pammal. Road also serves stone quarries in Kundrathur and temples attracting devotees on weekends. Residents request road widening to ease congestion. Tambaram Corporation official stated UGD work in final stages; State Highways Department will pave road upon completion. Highways Department sources confirmed 3 km total length with 1.5 km completed; additional cuts added for house and building networks; restoration will begin after completion certificate provided.

Chennai Bypass to Add Access Points and Barrier-Free Tolling

NHAI plans new bypass entry and exit points at Tiruneermalai and Kallikuppam, alongside barrier-free tolling at Tiruneermalai and Athipattu-Menambedu.

Key facts

NHAI has issued a work order for new Chennai bypass access at Tiruneermalai, connecting the corridor with the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ), the airport and southern Chennai. A further entry and exit at Kallikuppam, near Menambedu, is planned to connect Ambattur with areas north of the Chennai-Tiruvallur railway line and ease travel for residents along Ambattur-Puzhal Road. The service road currently ends at Kallikuppam due to a railway track.

The Vanagaram toll plaza will move to Tiruneermalai. Surapattu’s plaza will be replaced by staggered, barrier-free Multi Lane Free Flow tolling at Athipattu, near Decathlon, and Menambedu. FASTag detection, cameras and automatic number plate recognition will support electronic collection; e-notices will be issued when collection fails.

Earlier NHAI plans include a six-lane vehicular underpass at Vanagaram Junction and a new Cooum causeway between Ambattur and Maduravoyal. Indicative annual collections, based on 2025-26 figures, are ₹111.49 crore at Tiruneermalai and ₹90.35 crore at Athipattu-Menambedu. NHAI is introducing MLFF at 16 toll plazas nationally; three are in Tamil Nadu: Nemili and Chennasamudram on NH-48 and Paranur on NH-45. Trial runs are under way there.
