Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will issue another short tender after receiving only one bid for the Subhash Bridge restoration project. On Dec. 26, AMC announced expedited restoration and issued a short tender on Dec. 29, expecting to finalise the contract within 15 to 20 days. Once awarded, the work is expected to take nine months. The bridge was closed to traffic on Dec. 4 after cracks appeared across its width. Inspections by experts from SVNIT, IIT Roorkee and IIT Mumbai found settlement in the span above Pillar No. 9. The closure has increased congestion at RTO Circle, on the eastern Sabarmati Riverfront road and at Vadaj Circle. The project includes repairs and two-laned flanks along the bridge.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), under Gujarat government guidance, plans to restore Subhash Bridge over the Sabarmati River and build new two-lane bridges on both sides. The project is estimated to cost ₹250 crore and will be delivered through a single combined EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) tender.

The bridge, built in 1973, connects Ranip and Shahibaug. Cracks in its deck and settlement in the superstructure were observed on December 24, 2025, prompting its closure to traffic. Inspections by empanelled consultants and experts from IIT Roorkee and SVNIT Surat found the existing superstructure must be dismantled.

In phase one, it will be replaced with a superstructure featuring 38-metre spans and steel-composite girders; existing piers will be strengthened with micro-concrete jacketing. Phase two will construct new two-lane bridges at the same level, from foundations to superstructures. The project is intended to ease congestion between northern and central Ahmedabad and meet future traffic demand.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) closed Subhash Bridge to motorists at 6pm on Thursday after a crack and settlement above Pillar No. 9 were found; the complaint arrived around 4.30pm. Officials suspect other slabs may also be damaged. The bridge, built in 1973, is 453.7 metres long and 12.8 metres wide.

The bridge had received a ‘Good’ grade after an AMC visual inspection before this year’s monsoon. Under a 2023 government directive, bridges are classified in five categories: tests are not recommended for ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ bridges, but are advised for ‘Fair’, ‘Poor’ and ‘Critical’ bridges.

AMC will conduct more than five tests on all six slabs, including ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and concrete core tests. The results and consultants’ assessments will determine repairs; demolition and rebuilding of slabs have not been ruled out.

Ongoing construction projects across Ahmedabad are reshaping roads and disrupting daily travel. Affected areas include Subhash Bridge, Makarba, and Vadaj.
