A portion of a three-storey residential building (G+3 structure with makeshift shed on third floor) in Dharmi Society of Shahibaug collapsed on Tuesday. Cracks had appeared in upper sections, particularly the third-floor shed, causing the roof, staircase section, and part of the second floor to cave in. Fire and Emergency Services evacuated 16 residents including infants and elderly citizens; no casualties reported. Officials requested AMC to inspect remaining structure and initiate demolition ahead of monsoon rains.

As of early 2025, AMC flagged 292 unsafe buildings, up from 109 in 2021-22 and 151 in 2022-23. Of these, 237 are categorised as dilapidated, and 136 have collapsed or been demolished. Of 25 heritage-listed structures deemed dangerously dilapidated, 10 have collapsed in past two years and five partially demolished. Ahead of monsoon, AMC identified 261 additional hazardous buildings along Rath Yatra route in Shahpur, Khadia, and Dariapur. AMC has mandated structural stability certificates for all buildings over 15 years old and set up zonal control rooms for citizen reports on deteriorating structures.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated six completed Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) projects worth ₹279.80 crore and laid foundation stones for six projects estimated at ₹304.05 crore, taking the 12-project package to ₹583.85 crore. The programme was held under the Seva, Sankalp and Samarpan Abhiyan.

Completed works include a four-lane Vadaj Junction flyover (₹127.92 crore); the Makarba four-lane railway overbridge on the Ahmedabad-Botad line (₹98.60 crore), connecting Makarba, Vejalpur, Corporate Road and S.G. Highway; 328 of 1,190 planned EWS homes under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana at TP-39, Thaltej (₹22.24 crore); 15 fire-station first-response vehicles (₹19.74 crore); 10 engine-equipped emergency boats (₹3.40 crore); and Shahibaug rehabilitation with 108 homes and 46 shops (₹7.90 crore).

New projects include Ramapir Tekra road-network development in Stadium Ward (₹72.78 crore); rehabilitation of an 1,800-mm drainage line from Nagarvel Hanuman Temple to Guruji Bridge (₹65.51 crore); a drainage pumping station and rising line at Navana, Vatva (₹61.81 crore); an AMTS/BRTS electric-bus charging and parking facility at TP-110, Nikol-Kathwada (₹61.89 crore); a bus depot, parking and charging station near SP Ring Road (₹28.08 crore); and a Sabarmati east-bank temple circuit linking Saptarishi Ashram, Jagannath Temple and Atal Ghat (₹13.98 crore). The event also included a housing draw and appointment letters for more than 450 Assistant Technical Supervisors and around 50 Junior Clerks.

The six new projects are road-network development at Ramapir Tekra LAP, Stadium Ward (₹72.78 crore); an 1,800-mm drainage-line rehabilitation from Nagarvel Hanuman Temple to Guruji Bridge (₹65.51 crore); a drainage pumping station and rising line at Navana, Vatva (₹61.81 crore); an AMTS/BRTS electric-bus charging and parking facility at TP-110, Nikol-Kathwada (₹61.89 crore); a bus depot, parking and charging station near SP Ring Road (₹28.08 crore); and a tourism temple circuit along the Sabarmati’s eastern bank linking Saptarishi Ashram, Jagannath Temple and Atal Ghat (₹13.98 crore).

The event included a draw for newly constructed housing and appointment letters for more than 450 Assistant Technical Supervisors and around 50 Junior Clerks. The campaign marks 25 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public service.

The four-lane Vadaj flyover will be inaugurated on Thursday, September 24. Built in two years at a cost of ₹128 crore, it has two wings connecting Usmanpura and Ranip, plus a 365-metre link between Gandhi Ashram and Usmanpura. Its left side is 670 metres long and its right side 700 metres; parking is provided underneath. It is expected to benefit more than 1.5 lakh people and improve connectivity between Ashram Road and Ranip, and Usmanpura, Gandhi Ashram, Bhimjipura, Dudheshwar and Shahibaug.

• Five additional spans on the river and Shahibaug sides of Ahmedabad’s Subhash Bridge were demolished on July 5 under expert supervision, with no safety-related issues reported, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said.
• The 453-metre bridge, built in 1973, was closed on December 4, 2025, after significant settlement near Pillar No. 9. Inspections by experts from SVNIT, IIT Roorkee and IIT Bombay found serious cracks in the pillars.
• Gujarat initially approved a ₹236-crore plan to repair the bridge and build two parallel two-lane structures, but authorities later opted for a complete teardown.
• The first demolition phase on July 1 removed three spans into the Sabarmati riverbed under controlled engineering supervision.
