The Coimbatore Corporation will develop a Bamboo Park in SIHS Colony under Ward 55, covering 4.14 acres at an estimated cost of ₹1.46 crore. Foundation stone laid September 24, 2025 by Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, and Mayor K. Ranganayaki.

The park will host over 20 tree species and more than 25 plants, shrubs, and bamboo varieties. Trees include Terminalia arjuna, Pongamia pinnata, Mimusops elengi, and Butea monosperma. Bamboo species include Bambusa vulgaris and Phyllostachys aurea, along with herbal and ornamental plants like Heliconia rostrata and Cymbopogum citratus.

Facilities: benches, metal sculptures, RO water, playground structures (spiral slides, seesaws, swings, spring riders, climbing frames, music walls), sensory trail, yoga area, pathways, parking, and toilets.

Other projects with foundation stones laid: medians at Pollachi Main Road–Sundarapuram Road (₹22.6 lakh), Dr. Balasundaram Road (₹43.5 lakh), and Masakalipalayam Main Road (₹45 lakh).

The SIHS Colony Rail Overbridge (ROB) between Ondipudur and SIHS Colony in Coimbatore is 90% complete but delayed from April to August 2025. The 700-metre bridge is a Rs 55-crore project by the State Highways Department.

Project history: Announced November 2010 at Rs 19.24 crore budget; work halted after regime change in 2011; revived in 2013 at revised budget of Rs 21.16 crore; stalled again due to land acquisition issues and legal proceedings by landowners; resumed February 2023 after 10-year delay.

After DMK returned to power, government allocated Rs 29.4 crore more for land acquisition in September 2021. Total compensation settled: Rs 28.37 crore with all 63 landowners. Work suspended during Pongal festival January 2025, then completely stopped; resumed later but progressing slowly.

Completed works: pier, deck slabs, BT roads, one of two retaining walls on Ondipudur side. Pending: approach road on Ondipudur side and one retaining wall. Concrete curing will take at least one month after wall construction.

The State Highways Department plans to complete the main road overbridge (ROB) works at SIHS Colony in Coimbatore city by the end of February 2025.

• 28 spans, including one span constructed by Railways Department
• Two approach roads: one near Ondipudur and one near SIHS Colony

The approach road on the SIHS Colony side has been constructed. The approach road on the Ondipudur side had construction delays and commenced after Pongal, with completion targeted for end of February.

The project includes development of service roads 3.75 metres wide each, to be taken up later.

Project delays were attributed to issues related to utility lines.

Residents of SIHS Colony have urged the State Highways Department to expedite the construction of a rail over-bridge (ROB) in the locality. The project was scheduled for completion but residents are pressing officials to speed up the work.

Farmers and residents of Chinniyampalayam and Irugur say the Airports Authority of India (AAI) rejected its assurance to provide a 10.5-metre-wide approach road beside the expanded Coimbatore airport’s perimeter wall. The expansion is expected to cut off existing local access routes, prompting months of protests.

A proposed 1,917-metre-long, 60-metre-wide road would run from Neelambur near Avinashi Road, opposite Le Meridien Hotel, to the expanded airport. Locals sought 10.5-metre-wide service roads on both sides up to the airport campus and along one side to the western boundary near SIHS Colony. AAI reportedly agreed two months ago, pending headquarters discussions in Delhi.

At a District Collector-convened meeting on Wednesday, officials said the proposal was rejected. AAI plans to cover the road area with a perimeter wall, leaving only a 3.75-metre service road, farmers said. About 2 km of right-of-way road is proposed; airport premises would occupy one side for around 1,750 metres, with private land on the other. Residents will continue protesting until AAI provides written assurance.
