Shanti nagar is a calm, quiet and traffic free, good residential location.
Not much of commercial activities are happening here, though of late many small and medium size shops / offices are opened in the recent past.
This is very cosmopolitan area, surrounded by all types of community people.
This is a prime location, center place for all major localities like City Market, M G Road, Jaya nagar etc. Railway station is hardly 6 kms from this place.
No doubt, the roads are not much maintained by the authorities despite repeated requests & reminders. There is peace prevailing here and the life is worth living. With a little more care and attention to the development of the place, by the elected representatives, this location will prove to be place of comfortable living.

Kengal Hanumanthaiah Road Set for White-Topping After Police Approval

Bengaluru Traffic Police has permitted preliminary works on Kengal Hanumanthaiah Road, paving the way for planned white-topping of a one-kilometre stretch.

  • After seven months of efforts, B-SMILE secured partial Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) permission for drain, footpath and utility works on Kengal Hanumanthaiah Road. Final approval for white-topping requires a time-bound action plan.
  • B-SMILE may begin white-topping within a month on the 1-km stretch from KH Circle to Kreeda Junction. The project was tendered to one contractor as part of a package covering four stretches, including JC Road.
  • BTP had withheld permission in mid-2025 because work on JC Road was slow and disrupted traffic. KH Road links south and southeast Bengaluru with the centre; JC Road is its parallel alternative. The stretch has heavy bus traffic to Shanthinagar Bus Station and substantial flooding during monsoon.
  • BWSSB has completed work on one side; work on the other is due to begin soon. B-SMILE plans four phases, working lane-wise to keep traffic moving, with police managing peak-hour traffic. Completion is expected to take at least six months.
Tunnel Road project threatens six acres of Lalbagh land and ecosystem

The proposed 16.7 km Tunnel Road between Hebbal and Silk Board will acquire nearly six acres of Lalbagh Botanical Garden and risks damaging its ecosystem, ancient rock, lake, and 3,000 plant species.

The 16.7 km Tunnel Road Project between Hebbal and Silk Board will pass beneath Lalbagh for 700 m with two 50-foot-wide tunnels running 50 to 100 ft. below ground, plus two long ramps and a ventilation shaft. Around 23,800 sq. meters (nearly six acres) of Lalbagh land along the 1.1 km Siddapura Road stretch between Ashoka Pillar and Marigowda Junction will be acquired. A 1.4 km entry ramp starts about 50 m from Ashoka Pillar; a 1.1 km exit ramp emerges near Marigowda Junction, facilitating movement from Shantinagar, Wilson Garden, Dairy Circle, and Jayanagar towards Hebbal only.

Concerns raised by activists:

  • The 3-billion-year-old Lalbagh Rock, declared a National Geological Monument by GSI in 1975 and topped by the 16th-century Kempegowda watchtower marking Bengaluru's early boundary, will have two 15 m tunnels and two 10 m ramps bored through it using tunnel boring machines, risking fracturing and terrain destabilization.
  • Lalbagh Lake (40 acres) serves as vital rainwater catchment and biodiversity hotspot for fish, amphibians, reptiles, and migratory birds. Tunnel entry ramp passes less than 100 ft. from its edge; tunnelling could disrupt underground water channels, causing flooding, drying, or contamination.
  • Tunnelling could alter aquifers sustaining nearby wells, borewells, and interconnected lakes; water seepage into tunnels could drain fractured-rock aquifers; construction chemicals could contaminate groundwater.
  • Lalbagh's estimated 3,000 plant species, including rare and heritage trees, face removal within six acres; roots damaged by excavation and vibration may weaken nearby trees causing long-term mortality.
