An unidentified woman in her 50s, believed homeless, drowned after a nearly 60-foot-long, old and heavily rusted steel truss foot overbridge over the Najafgarh drain in Roop Nagar collapsed on Tuesday morning at 9:28 AM.

The bridge, constructed 33 years ago and managed by Delhi's irrigation and flood control (I&FC) department, was declared "structurally unsafe" in March 2025 and officially closed in July 2025, but continued to be used by commuters who bypassed barricades.

Preliminary investigation suggested structural deterioration caused the collapse. A case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (causing death by negligence) was registered against unknown persons.

I&FC minister Parvesh Verma ordered a three-member committee to investigate and submit a report within 48 hours. All similar iron foot overbridges across Delhi have been directed to undergo safety audits.

Residents said the bridge was a key access point between Roop Nagar and Gur Mandi, regularly used by schoolchildren, college students, domestic workers and locals. Multiple eyewitnesses reported the bridge began shaking before collapsing, with five to six people on it at the time. A domestic worker said she had just stepped onto it around 9:10 AM when it shook and snapped.

Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced major road and drainage upgrade for Burari. The 7.1-km Burari Road corridor runs from Outer Ring Road through Baba Colony and Nathupura to Hiranki. 3.2-km bituminous stretch: Outer Ring Road-Baba Colony and Nathupura-Hiranki sections. 3.9-km Baba Colony-Nathupura RCC road estimated at Rs 39 crore. Nathupura-Hiranki section estimated at Rs 9 crore. Central verge to be constructed along entire 7.1-km stretch. 9.3-km comprehensive drainage network estimated at Rs 75 crore to address waterlogging. Drainage covers Amrit Vihar-Bengali Colony stretch (drains on both sides) and Swaroop Nagar More-Burari Creek stretch. Drainage work already tendered; road work to be tendered within 10 days. Objective to upgrade entire corridor in integrated manner with coordinated execution. Until reconstruction begins, water sprinkling to control dust.

Chandrawal Phase-II water treatment plant’s operations halted on March 22 after a damaged 600 mm backwash pipeline flooded its pump house, disabling electrical and mechanical equipment. The plant, whose treatment units date to 1935 and 1955, has decades-old customised 6.6 kV motors with unavailable spare parts; residual moisture has caused repeated faults. The Delhi Jal Board restored pumping of 47 MGD on March 27, against 58 MGD capacity, but an 18 MGD pump set failed again. Full stabilisation was expected to take three more days. The plant has had outages for maintenance on July 20 and August 4, valve damage on August 18, a rising-line leak on November 16 and another leak on February 12. Supply was cut from twice daily to once daily in affected areas; around 100 additional tankers were deployed. Areas affected include Civil Lines, Kamla Nagar, Delhi University, Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar, Old Rajinder Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Inderlok and Rani Jhansi DDA complex. Residents also reported muddy water and shortages near Ramjas Ground, Tigri Extension and West Patel Nagar.
