Coimbatore Infrastructure Projects Stall Amid Rising Traffic and Industrial Demand
Oneindia Tamil · · Infrastructure
Coimbatore’s bypasses, flyover extensions, Metro proposal and other infrastructure plans remain stalled, worsening congestion and raising concerns about industrial growth and investment.
Key facts
Coimbatore’s manufacturing, education and healthcare sectors are expanding, but congestion affects Avinashi, Trichy, Sathy, Mettupalayam, Pollachi and Thadagam roads. The West Bypass is planned from Mylkal to Narasimpalayam; only its first phase, from Mylkal to Mathampatti, is operational, with no sign of phases two and three. The government has abandoned the East Bypass planned from Madukkarai to Periyanaickenpalayam. The 10-km G.D. Naidu Flyover is operational, but its announced 5-km extension to Neelambur has stalled. Plans for the old Avinashi Road flyover, and flyovers at Singanallur, Lala Road, Sundarapuram and Saravanampatti, have not advanced. The L&B Bypass six-lane expansion remains at the study stage, as does the Uppilipalayam roundabout upgrade. The Centre returned Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore Metro proposal twice. The Vellalore integrated bus terminal has made no progress. NITI Aayog has approved the airport expansion after a decade of delay. Industry representatives warn inadequate infrastructure could deter investment; Singanallur and Sundarapuram flyovers remain under study.
Farmers Propose Veerapandi Press Campus for Coimbatore AIIMS
thehindu · · Infrastructure
Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam has urged officials to consider the vacant 150-acre Government of India Press campus at Veerapandi for the proposed Coimbatore AIIMS.
Key facts
Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector to propose the vacant Government of India Press campus at Veerapandi, near Periyanaickenpalayam, for the district’s proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The association urged the State and Union governments to avoid acquiring agricultural land.
Established in the 1960s, the Press has been closed for five years. Its approximately 150-acre campus is under Union government control, avoiding the need for land acquisition. The campus includes residential quarters, a recreation club, cooperative store, post office, sports ground, water-treatment facilities and sewage-treatment infrastructure. About 40 acres in the eastern residential area and over 100 acres in the western operational section are underused.
The association cited road access via the Press Colony bus stop and a possible future metro station. It also proposed using land earmarked for the Pasteur Institute for AIIMS-related medical research facilities, and asked the Collector to convey the proposal to State and Union governments.
Repair work begins on Mettupalayam Road flyover
The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
Rectification work on the Periyanaickenpalayam flyover on Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore has started after land acquisition completion.
Key facts
The much-delayed rectification work on the Periyanaickenpalayam flyover on Mettupalayam Road has commenced. Land acquisition from seven property owners is complete, and compensation of Rs 1.5 crore is expected by week's end, after which notices to vacate will be issued and affected buildings demolished.
The Centre sanctioned Rs 7.5 crore for rectification and upgrade seven months ago, but work stalled due to negotiations with landowners. The service road alignment will be corrected by widening the stretch, and street lights will be installed. The contractor has been instructed to complete work within six months (contract period is nine months).
The 1,850m flyover was built at Rs 115.5 crore, completed December 2023. Since inauguration it has been plagued by design flaws: undulations and bumps, absent street lights and stormwater drains, and a dangerously aligned service road. At the 0-point junction, vehicles from Coimbatore heading to Mettupalayam must make a sharp 90-degree right turn to merge, followed by an abrupt left to avoid oncoming traffic, violating Indian Road Congress guidelines. Following representations to the Prime Minister's Office highlighting structural flaws, MoRTH prepared a detailed project report for corrective measures.
