Madras High Court Seeks Response on Periyakulam Solar Panels and Tourism

The Madras High Court has asked Coimbatore Corporation to explain floating solar panels and commercial tourism activities at Periyakulam, with the case listed for December 5.

Key facts

The Madras High Court sought an explanation from Coimbatore Corporation during a hearing of a public interest litigation filed in November 2024. The petition seeks to stop commercial operations and remove floating solar panels at Periyakulam (Ukkadam Big Tank), citing possible harm to migratory birds, aquatic species and the lake’s ecology.

Installed in October 2024 for 154 kW of power, the panels cost an estimated ₹1.45 crore. Since 2022, the Corporation and private firm ECHT have offered speed boats, pontoon boats, jet skis, shark boats, aqua cycles and kayaks. Zip-line and zip-cycle facilities were added in 2023 through another operator at a cost of ₹62.17 lakh.

The court was told that high-speed diesel boats in several lakes within the district’s core forest areas disturb wildlife and cause air and water pollution. Their noise can carry up to 100 metres from the riverbed, and diesel may leak into the water. The court added the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation as a party and directed notices to be issued. The next hearing is December 5.
