Hagadur Villages Report Toxic Smoke, Sewage and Poor Roads

Residents of Nagondanahalli and three nearby villages report three months of garbage burning, toxic smoke, sewage and poor roads, and seek separation from BBMP.

Key facts

Thousands of residents in Nagondanahalli, Hagadur ward, Mahadevapura assembly segment, say garbage has been dumped and burned for three months, producing toxic smoke. Tirumalashetty Halli, Channasandra and Samethanahalli are also affected by dumping and burning at a site between the four villages. Residents say repeated complaints to BBMP’s assistant engineer and health inspector have not resolved the problem; Nagondanahalli has about 7,000 voters. They want the village removed from BBMP jurisdiction, citing denied basic infrastructure, damaged 80-ft and 30-ft roads and sewage flowing on roads for weeks. Resident Manjunath NV said site owners may be receiving rent for dumping and should be issued notices. BBMP assistant engineer Gururaj said the health inspector had been informed. Health inspector Prakash said marshals were deployed and the fire contained, but the problem restarted. BBMP Chief Health Officer Dr Syed Sirajuddin Madani called garbage burning a major health concern because waste includes plastic and other potentially harmful substances.
