Residents say waste from Ashokapuram and Kurudampalayam panchayats and Gudalur Municipality is dumped at cremation grounds in Coimbatore’s northern periphery. Kurudampalayam collects about 10 tonnes daily and dumps it near the cremation ground at Maruthi Nagar, where accumulated waste rots and smells. In Ashokapuram, waste is dumped behind State Bank Colony; residents say unknown lorries also dump and burn waste there, reducing use of the cremation ground. Gudalur’s waste is dumped near Samichettipalayam, while Bilichi panchayat dumps waste at the cremation ground on Mathampalayam Main Road.
A District Rural Development Agency official said peri-urban panchayats and town panchayats lack sufficient land for solid-waste management. Cremation-ground areas are temporarily used for dumping and segregation as waste generation rises and proposed facilities near homes face objections. Plans are under way for resource recovery parks to segregate and process dry, wet, garden and sanitary waste, equipped with baling machines, shredders, dewatering units and an incinerator. Location identification and detailed project reports are at preliminary stages.
