GHMC Seeks Criminal Case After Fatal Cellar Excavation in Hyderabad

GHMC blamed safety violations during cellar excavation for three deaths in Chandrapuri Colony and asked police to file a criminal case against the developer.

GHMC said inadequate safety precautions during cellar excavation caused soil erosion that killed three people and injured one at Chandrapuri Colony, Mansoorabad, near LB Nagar, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. It blamed owner/developer negligence and said the developer had been served a notice on January 16 to follow excavation safety measures. GHMC wrote to the LB Nagar police seeking a criminal case and plans to issue a show-cause notice on cancelling the building permission.

Kusuma Ramesh, Kusuma Vijaya and builder Siddam Sainath received GHMC permission on December 23 to build a commercial property with two cellars, a ground floor and four upper floors on a 1,000-square-yard plot. Cited violations included no retaining wall or appropriate setbacks, workers without safety gear such as helmets, no site barricades, and excavation begun without a commencement notice. Mansoorabad corporator and BJP GHMC Deputy Floor Leader Koppula Narsimha Reddy urged Mayor G. Vijaya Laxmi to provide ₹5 lakh to each deceased person’s family.
