Chennai residents near Putlur check dam use cartoons to raise awareness about sewage polluting the Cooum river and threatening groundwater recharge.

Residents of Manavala Nagar near Putlur check dam in Tiruvallur district, about 40 km from Chennai, launched cartoon campaign titled 'Koovam Kudineer' to highlight sewage pollution in upper reaches of Cooum river. The clean stretch near the check dam is degrading due to raw sewage release from urbanising areas. Cooum river is a significant groundwater recharge source for the locality. Sewage discharge affects both the river and Vengathur lake. Manavala Nagar Residents' Welfare Association met Tiruvallur MLA T. Arunkumar requesting operation of dysfunctional Periakuppam sewage treatment plant and increased sewage treatment capacity. Residents stressed need for urgent measures to protect groundwater recharge zones. Cartoons explain network of check dams and connection between Cooum river and Chembarambakkam reservoir, one of Chennai's drinking water sources.
