Mamura Blaze Exposes Narrow Access and Fire Safety Gaps

A deadly Mamura fire exposed how narrow lanes hindered firefighting and raised concerns about unauthorised construction, building approvals and fire safety compliance.

Firefighters reached Mamura within eight minutes, but narrow lanes prevented fire engines from reaching the building; crews laid hoses from the nearest accessible point. Police suspect a spark from an electric scooter battery charging on the ground floor caused the blaze. At least two people died, dozens were rescued, and police said more than 100 residents were brought out safely, with ladders used to reach neighbouring rooftops.

The four-storey building, with stilt parking, housed around 50 families in nearly 80 one- and two-room rental units. Police booked and detained the owner and leaseholder, and are investigating possible fire-safety violations and operation without mandatory approvals.

Experts said unauthorised construction and disputes over authority in village abadi areas have complicated enforcement in Noida. Fire-safety requirements link building height to approach-road width. Under National Building Code norms, buildings around five storeys and under 15 metres require prescribed fire-safety measures; Delhi bars approval of plans for buildings exceeding 15 metres without meeting requirements.

Two Die in Fire at Mamura Residential Building, 50 Families Evacuated

A fire at a four-storey residential building in Mamura, Sector 66, killed two people and led to the evacuation of around 50 families.

A fire broke out on the ground floor of a G+4 residential building in Lane 2, Mamura village, Sector 66, Noida. Police suspect a spark from an electric vehicle battery being charged ignited nearby petrol-powered vehicles; the exact cause remains under investigation.

Seven fire tenders, a hydraulic platform, fire department teams and police responded. Around 50 families were evacuated. Two people, a man and a woman, died at the district hospital after suffering severe smoke inhalation.

Police registered a case against the building owner or leaseholder, who was taken into custody. Authorities are investigating fire-safety compliance and whether lapses or negligence contributed to the deaths.

Noida Plans Chhijarsi Road Widening and Sector 62 Skywalk

Noida will widen roads near Chhijarsi and build a covered circular skywalk at Sector 62 to ease congestion and improve pedestrian access.

Noida Authority has issued a ₹6.5 crore tender to widen and beautify the Sector 63 road running alongside the Delhi-Meerut Expressway up to Chhijarsi intersection. The road near Chhijarsi will be widened by one metre on both sides. The work is part of a 3.5-kilometre model mobility corridor from Sector 62 roundabout to Mamura tri-section; four agencies reportedly expressed interest in an earlier tender for road widening and improvements. Pushta Road will also be widened up to Chhijarsi and in front of Bahlolpur roundabout, with footpath and intersection improvements planned between Chhijarsi and Sector 62 Model Town roundabout.

At Sector 62, the authority plans a circular skywalk for pedestrians travelling via National Highway-9. Its circumference will be about 400 metres; it will have escalators at two corners on the Noida side, lifts at two corners on the NH-9 side, and an iron-sheet cover. The ₹40 crore project has in-principle approval, with the tender expected soon. An existing foot overbridge from Ghaziabad will be integrated with the skywalk.
