Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has provided around 10,000 house service connections (HSCs) under the Kurichi-Kuniyamuthur underground drainage (UGD) project. Nearly 42,000 HSCs have been sanctioned; commissioning can proceed after at least 15,000 are completed.

Wastewater will be treated at the Vellalore sewage treatment plant, with capacity of 33.53 million litres per day (MLD). Pipeline work, including at the railway crossing near Podanur station, is complete.

Launched in 2018, the ₹591-crore project was due for completion in 2021. The corporation has nearly 5.96 lakh property-tax assessments and HSCs, and at least three lakh connections are mandatory. Efforts to make the project functional are ongoing.

• Chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated the Kurichi-Kuniyamuthur underground drainage (UGD) project by videoconference. Completed for ₹597.14 crore under the Amrut scheme, it covers Coimbatore Corporation wards 87–100 in the south zone and is intended to provide 69,688 household connections.
• Designed for 30 years from 2020, it estimates wastewater of 40.26 million litres per day (MLD) for 3.92 lakh people in 2035 and 53.07 MLD for 5.17 lakh people in 2050.
• Initial administrative approval for ₹449 crore was issued in October 2017; revised approval for ₹591.14 crore followed in February 2019. Sewer laying began in 2018 and a sewage treatment plant (STP) was established at Vellalore dumpyard in 2019. Completion was due in December 2023 but was delayed, including because of the Covid lockdown.
• The project includes 390.19 km of sewer pipelines, nearly 16,200 manholes, 13 sewerage zones, 19 lift stations and 11 pumping stations. More than 40,000 household connections have been provided; sewage will be conveyed to the Vellalore STP.

The Coimbatore Corporation’s water supply improvement scheme for Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur has entered its trial run phase after pipeline works across the Podanur Railway line were completed. It will distribute water from the Pilloor III scheme to South Zone wards 99 and 100, previously supplied by Pilloor I.

Launched under AMRUT in 2018, the works include 18 overhead tanks in Kuniyamuthur and 21 in Kurichi, intended to cover wards 85 and 87–100. Water has been pumped into four tanks in Carmel Nagar, Mettur and Anbu Nagar. After testing, residents in the affected wards are expected to receive water every two to three days.

• The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) and Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) carried out pipeline works over the past week, reducing supply from 100 million litres per day (MLD) to 50 MLD. The interlinking will connect the Siruvani pipeline with Pillur Scheme-3 to improve water management when dam storage is low.
• Last Friday, State Highways Department road-widening work damaged a major Siruvani pipeline near Kalampalayam on Siruvani Main Road, disrupting supply to Kurichi and Kuniyamuthur and wasting thousands of litres of treated water.
• TWAD is conducting emergency repairs; officials expect full restoration after joint-packing and other repair work is completed.
• On Sunday, the dam level was 40.34 feet against full capacity of 49.53 feet. Drawdown was 66.32 MLD, against the agreed supply of 101.4 MLD.

• A major Siruvani drinking water pipeline was damaged on Friday during a State Highways road-widening project near Kalampalayam in Coimbatore.
• The damage happened near an amusement park on Siruvani Main Road while tree roots were being removed using an earthmover.
• The line is part of the Siruvani drinking water supply scheme serving Kurichi-Kuniyamuthur areas of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC).
• The road widening project on Siruvani Road is 5.2 km long, from Kalampalayam to Madampatti.
• The project aims to convert the road into a four-lane stretch with medians.
• Estimated cost: Rs 33.8 crore.
• The incident led to a dispute between the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board and the State Highways Department over prior intimation and compensation.
• Residents in the affected areas faced disrupted water supply and wastage of drinking water.
