Kona Expressway Construction Triggers Goods-Vehicle Curbs From August 10

Traffic restrictions from August 10 will regulate goods vehicles on the Kona Expressway and connected routes during construction of its six-lane elevated corridor.

From August 10, Howrah City Police and Kolkata Police will impose traffic restrictions during construction of the six-lane elevated corridor on Kona Expressway.
- Kolkata-bound goods vehicles cannot use Kona Expressway from Nibra between 6 am and 11 pm; Howrah-bound goods vehicles cannot use the expressway via Vidyasagar Setu during those hours.
- Kolkata-side goods vehicles bound for Howrah and NH-16/NH-19 may use Vidyasagar Setu–Kona Expressway–Nibra–NH-16 or Vidyasagar Setu–Howrah Andul Road–Alampur–NH-16 only from 11 pm to 6 am. Vehicles on Andul Road must be below 4.5 metres because of the Mourigram rail-over-bridge.
- Kolkata-bound goods vehicles from Dankuni may use Dankuni crossing–Maitypara–Nibedita Setu from 10 pm to 6 am. From Kolaghat via NH-16, they may use Ranihati–Dhulagarh–Nibra–Kona Expressway–Vidyasagar Setu from 11 pm to 6 am.
- No Kolkata-bound goods vehicle may enter from Alampur or Salap towards Vidyasagar Setu via Andul Road at any time. Cars and buses may use Kona Expressway as usual.
- HGVs and MGVs are restricted from 6 am to 11 pm on Vidyasagar Setu and ramps, CGR Road east from Bascule Bridge, Garden Reach Road and connecting feeder roads. Kolkata-side goods vehicles using NH-12 may take Tala Bridge–BT Road–Nivedita Setu from 10 pm to 6 am. LPG, CNG, petroleum, oil, lubricants, oxygen, vegetables, medicine, fruits, fish and milk vehicles may travel as usual. Goods vehicles must display their destination on the windscreen.
Howrah Ward 50 Residents Protest Two Weeks of Waterlogging

Residents blocked Benaras Road near Kona for about an hour on Monday, disrupting traffic towards Belgharia, to protest waterlogging that has persisted for two weeks. Knee-deep, contaminated water has submerged lanes in Madhya Khalia, Paschim Para, Kona Khalia and Paschimdaspada, near Chamrail panchayat. Children cross the water to reach school; residents report foul smells, illness and skin problems. Snakes have entered homes, and four residents have reportedly been bitten. Patients are carried by handcart or by residents to ambulances waiting on the main road because vehicles cannot enter the lanes.
Protesters, mostly women, demanded immediate water removal and a permanent drainage solution. Residents said repeated appeals to the Howrah Municipal Corporation had not resolved the problem. Mousumi Hazra said water had stood for 15 days and residents had repeatedly sought pumps.
The corporation called Ward 50’s waterlogging a decades-old problem, citing low-lying agricultural land. An engineer said officials were pumping water but had difficulty finding a discharge point and were examining an alternative route. After using fire-services equipment in Dashnagar, officials said they would decide after a meeting whether to use similar equipment in Ward 50.
