Khunti Villagers Build Temporary Diversion Beside Collapsed Pelol Bridge
The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
Villagers built a 200-metre diversion beside Khunti’s collapsed Pelol bridge after months of delays, while authorities said repair and construction work had been initiated.
Key facts
About 150–200 villagers built a temporary diversion on the Khunti-Torpa-Kolebira road beside the collapsed Pelol bridge, using donated labour and ₹10,000 in contributions. The diversion is nearly 200 metres long and about five metres wide, allowing bikes to pass. Villagers supplied stone chips, cement and sand.
The Banai River bridge collapsed on June 19. Children had been climbing a 25-foot bamboo ladder to reach school; after images went viral, officials stopped them and promised an alternative. On August 19, Pelol villagers marked two months since the collapse by cutting a cake on the bridge. A diversion between Pelaul and Hesel villages also broke and remains unrepaired, villagers said, citing impacts on employment, schooling and local development.
Gram Pradhan Shivshankar Tidu said more than 1,000 villagers from adjoining villages would improve the diversion using JCB and Poklane machines. The administration said the Road Construction Department would repair the bridge and build a diversion road; tendering was completed and a work order issued. Deputy Commissioner R Ronita said she would seek to expedite construction.
