Nagpur civic body struggles to collect ₹145 crore property tax from government

Nagpur Municipal Corporation faces ₹145 crore in unpaid property tax from 358 government offices, including major defaulters like BSNL and the Police Training Centre.

Key facts

Nagpur Municipal Corporation struggling to recover Rs145.14 crore in property tax from government departments. Of revised target of Rs325 crore for current financial year, Rs215 crore recovered so far; Rs110 crore outstanding.

358 government properties owe NMC: 270 state govt properties with dues of Rs131.19 crore; 88 Central govt properties with dues of Rs13.94 crore.

Major Central govt defaulters: BSNL office building Khalasi Line Rs1.29 crore; Telecom Dept offices and staff quarters in Khamla, Nandanvan, Sakkardara totalling Rs1.40 crore.

Major State govt defaulters: Divisional Sports Complex Mankapur Rs6.55 crore; Police Training Centre Surendra Nagar hostels Rs6.14 crore combined; State CID office Jafar Nagar Rs38.29 lakh; Government College of Fine Arts Rs17.05 lakh.

Municipal Commissioner Vipin Itankar issued demi-official letters to departments directing early payment. Deputy Commissioner Milind Meshram stated officials assured payment once budgets allocated. NMC has already recovered Rs12 crore from govt departments. Civic body considering 10% property tax hike for citizens to compensate for shortfall.
