Heavy Rain Floods Delhi Roads and Giri Nagar Pumping Station

The Free Press Journal · · Infrastructure

Heavy rain caused waterlogging and traffic jams across Delhi, while flooding at Giri Nagar pumping station triggered a water crisis in several South Delhi areas.

Key facts

Heavy rain on August 14 caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions across Delhi. Roads flooded in Chhatarpur and Greater Kailash, as well as Connaught Place, India Gate, Lajpat Nagar, Dwarka and Rohini; Noida, Gurugram and Ghaziabad also reported waterlogging and traffic jams. AAP leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj criticised the BJP-led Delhi government’s preparedness. Atishi said the Giri Nagar pumping station in Kalkaji had flooded, causing a water crisis lasting several days for residents of Giri Nagar, Kalkaji, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension. The flooding followed two incidents on August 10 in which eight people died. Atishi separately claimed that about two dozen people had died due to heavy rain. The India Meteorological Department upgraded its alert to a red warning for August 14, forecasting continued rain until at least August 17, with thunderstorms, lightning and intense showers. Earlier bad weather had delayed and cancelled flights at Delhi Airport.
