Kochi Seaport-Airport Road Revival Advances on HMT-NAD Stretch

Preparatory work has begun on Kochi’s HMT-NAD road stretch, with tenders due by March 1 and construction to follow.

Preparatory work began on the HMT-NAD section of Kochi’s Seaport-Airport Road project on Wednesday. Tenders for the stretch, part of the second phase, are due to be completed by March 1, after which construction will begin. It will connect to a 1.9-km section built in 2021 after land acquisition in HMT Colony, Kalamassery.

The first phase, an 11.3-km stretch from Irumpanam to HMT Road, began in 2003. The second phase covers 14.4 km from HMT Road to the airport, including the HMT-NAD stretch. The project had been delayed for more than two decades over land transfers. Kerala acquired 2.4967 hectares of Naval Armament Depot land for ₹23.11 crore and sanctioned ₹17.31 crore to widen and develop nearby Thorappu Road. ₹37.90 crore for HMT land was deposited in a bank as directed by the High Court. HMT and NAD land has been handed over to the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala.
