Punjab government initiates land acquisition of 526 acres for a new residential township Eco City-4 in New Chandigarh, even as Eco City-3 remains under planning.

Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has initiated process to acquire 526.0355 acres for Eco City-4 Residential Project in New Chandigarh. Notification issued June 2 by Punjab housing and urban development department announced commencement of social impact assessment (SIA). Land spread across villages of Kartarpur, Kansala, Rajgarh and Boothgarh in Majri sub-tehsil of Mohali district. Project includes residential development and supporting road infrastructure, in line with approved master plan for New Chandigarh. SIA directed to be carried out in consultation with affected gram panchayats and landowners, examining public purpose, number of affected families, impact on homes and community assets, whether land requirement is minimum necessary, and social and economic costs. Project falls under planned development category under Section 2(1)(e) of Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013; gram sabha or landowner consent not required but consultations will be undertaken. Six-month deadline set for SIA completion. Following study, SIA report and social impact management plan will be prepared and made available to local bodies, district authorities, public and department website. Eco City-3 remains in acquisition and planning phase and has not yet emerged as developed township.
