Ongoing Metro Rail and flyover works are causing congestion on Anna Salai in Saidapet and Teynampet, with improvements expected after completion.

- The Greater Chennai Traffic Police held a helmet-awareness rally on Thursday, launched by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic East District, S. Megalina Eden, on Sivananda Salai. Students from three colleges, traffic wardens and police personnel participated.
- Eden said road accidents had declined from last year, citing police awareness programmes, greater public awareness and helmet compliance, strict enforcement, and fines based on automatic number plate recognition camera footage.
- Metro Rail and flyover works are causing congestion, particularly on Anna Salai in Saidapet and Teynampet; traffic is expected to improve significantly when the works are completed. Additional personnel are being deployed at key points on OMR and ECR, with traffic flow regulated to ease congestion.

Chennai has identified 219 flood-prone locations and arranged 1,320 pumps, while preparing boats, relief centres and drainage works ahead of the monsoon.
Key facts
Based on flooding in 2015, 2021 and 2023, the corporation identified 219 flood-prone locations, including low-lying areas and sites along ECR and OMR where metro construction is under way. It arranged 1,320 motor pumps and instructed metro officials to use underground excavation areas as temporary sumps during heavy rain, releasing water gradually afterward. IIT Madras, Anna University and OMR IT campuses were asked to use pumps and sumps and stagger rainwater releases onto OMR and ECR.
The city has readied 36 inflatable boats, 36 fiberglass-reinforced plastic boats and 215 relief centres; nearly 3,500 volunteers have registered. Precautions are being taken against possible backflow into stormwater drains connected to the Adyar estuary. Desilting is complete across 1,102 km of Chennai’s 1,683-km stormwater drain network, and more than 80% of works in 44 canals are complete.
