Bengaluru’s Kamaraj Road has reopened to two-way traffic after six years of closure for MG Road Pink Line Metro station construction.
Key facts
Kamaraj Road, between MG Road and Cubbon Road, reopened fully to vehicles on Friday, ending a six-year closure for construction of the MG Road underground station on the Pink Line. The carriageway from Cauvery Emporium towards Cubbon Road opened in June 2024; the Cubbon Road-to-Brigade Road carriageway opened on Friday.
The reconstructed stretch is 214 metres long, with both carriageways at least 11 metres wide. More than 80 trees were removed during construction; compensatory measures and landscaping are planned. Authorities expect the reopening to ease congestion on MG Road and improve access between Commercial Street and Brigade Road.

Kamaraj Road is expected to reopen fully to traffic in the first week of January 2026, after nearly six-and-a-half years of disruption for Namma Metro’s Pink Line underground station and tunnel works. The closure forced motorists to take lengthy detours to Brigade Road, Commercial Street and nearby commercial areas. Partial traffic movement on one side began in 2024, but full restoration was delayed by heavy machinery and material movement for station construction and interchange works between MG Road and the Cubbon Road junction. The Pink Line interchange connecting the Nagawara and Kalena Agrahara corridors is structurally complete. One carriageway is open, and the remaining lane is expected to open within 15 days, restoring normal traffic. Traffic from MG Road towards Cubbon Road through Cauvery Emporium junction had been eased earlier; traffic in the opposite direction continued to face diversions.
