Villupuram residents demand overbridge at Bharathi Nagar junction

About 200 residents of Arasur village in Villupuram staged a one-day hunger strike demanding a new overbridge near Bharathi Nagar on the Chennai-Trichy highway. The Bharathi Nagar junction has recorded 300 accidents since 2009, averaging 15-17 accidents per year or one per month. The National Highways Authority of India proposed constructing an overbridge at the junction in 2019. In 2023, the highways department announced foundation work had begun. Construction of an overbridge at Arasur junction, 500 metres away, has recently started. Residents now demand a second bridge specifically at Bharathi Nagar; the NHAI project director confirmed a proposal has been sent but approval is still pending.

Sewage pipeline installation began four months ago and was completed by September, but road work has been halted during the monsoon. Temporary wet mix washed away after the first monsoon spell, residents said. Uneven, slushy roads cause hardship for parents taking children to school, slow vehicles and increase accident risks during school hours. Ward 32 councillor E Elumalai said CMWSSB had paid road-cut charges to the corporation and a tender had been called for relaying. He said work was halted because of the monsoon and urged officials to apply wet mix as a temporary measure.
