The Hindu · · Infrastructure
Residents and commuters want a flyover at Ayothiyapattinam railway gate, where frequent closures cause long traffic queues and accidents.
Key facts

Buses to Attur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram and Chennai, and vehicles heading to Belur, Kuppanur, Valaisaiyur, Sukkampatti, Harur, Uthangarai, Thirupattur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore cross the gate. Trains to Virudhachalam, Chennai and Karaikkal, along with weekly express and goods trains, pass through it. The gate closes more than 10 times a day; hundreds of vehicles queue on both sides, and clearing traffic after it reopens takes over 30 minutes. Congestion worsens during school and college opening and closing times. Resident R. Lakshmaman said accidents occur frequently as heavy vehicles travel towards Harur, Uthangarai, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai. Roads extending a few kilometres from the gate are narrow because of houses and commercial establishments. Residents called on the State government to act.
