• Delhi plans to redevelop the 1.2km road from the EDM Mall foot overbridge to the Anand Vihar U-turn; bids were invited last week.
• A consultant will survey the area, map congestion points, footpaths and traffic islands, and identify permanent structures. Layout plans will cover the 1.2km road and 60-foot width, proposing traffic-flow improvements, pedestrian infrastructure, landscaping, street lighting, decorative illumination and upgraded street furniture. The study is expected to take one month; a second phase will seek approval for interventions.
• The project proposes 15.18 lane-kilometres of six-lane, 60-metre-wide road.
• A multimodal integration plan is also being finalised. Proposals include an underpass connecting the transport hub with Karkardooma, a pedestrian bridge with a travellator, improved pedestrian movement around the railway station, ISBT and RRTS station, and a new foot overbridge for commuters travelling between the railway station and Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh.

A March 27 plan proposes an underpass beneath Anand Vihar Railway Station to connect Karkardooma directly with the transport hub, a new pedestrian foot overbridge (FOB) with a travellator linking the railway station and Kaushambi side, and extending the existing FOB towards Karkardooma. Northern Railways is discussing the underpass’s feasibility with NCRTC and has assured it will provide a no-objection certificate for the existing FOB extension. Preliminary multimodal-integration discussions are underway among stakeholders.

The hub brings together Anand Vihar ISBT, Kaushambi bus depot, metro and railway stations, and the RRTS station. The existing FOB connects these transport facilities, but officials say rising commuter numbers make it inadequate. Karkardooma-side passengers currently use Master Somnath Marg or Swami Dayanand Marg; residential-colony roads are narrow and congested. Anand Vihar is also a Delhi-NCR traffic and pollution hotspot, frequently recording severe winter AQI levels.

A six-lane, 1,440-metre flyover over Road No. 56 linking Apsara Border and Anand Vihar has opened. It is expected to help 1.5 lakh commuters daily, bypass three traffic signals and save about 12 minutes per journey. The flyover aims to ease congestion at Ramprastha Colony, Vivek Vihar and Shreshth Vihar, and save about 40,300 litres of petrol and diesel daily while reducing carbon emissions.

The project was planned in 2019, but its start was delayed by the pandemic. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel laid its foundation stone in October 2022. Chief Minister Atishi inaugurated it on 26 December 2024.

The Delhi High Court reprimanded the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) over sewage-contaminated drinking water supplied to Yojana Vihar, Anand Vihar, Jagriti Enclave and nearby areas. A public interest litigation filed by advocate Dhruv Gupta raised health concerns. On July 2, the court ordered an on-ground inspection. The DJB reported that Yojana Vihar’s water network, installed 35 years ago, was beyond its functional lifespan; pipelines and household connections were severely damaged and required urgent replacement.

The DJB planned to issue replacement tenders by July 7 and award a contract by July 17. Work was expected to finish within 20 days of finalising the contract. The court directed completion around affected homes by August 2025 and warned delays would be treated seriously. Desilting of adjoining sewage treatment infrastructure was underway and expected to finish by August. The next hearing is scheduled for August 13.

AAP has never won Vishwas Nagar in three Delhi assembly elections. BJP’s OP Sharma won in 2013, 2015 and 2020, by more than 10,000 votes in 2015 and 16,000 in 2020. AAP has fielded local businessman Deepak Singhal, 38; Congress candidate Rajiv Chaudhary, 57, is also contesting. Sharma said he oversaw ₹8,000 crore of constituency works in five years; candidates pledged to address water and sewage problems.

The constituency has 204,780 voters: 108,057 men, 96,714 women and nine third-gender electors. It includes Preet Vihar, Anand Vihar, IP Extension, Jagriti Enclave, Swastha Vihar, Pushpanjali, Bahubali Enclave and Ram Vihar, as well as Karkardooma, Ghazipur, Hasanpur, Arya Nagar and Harijan Basti.

Residents cited damaged roads, sanitation, encroachment, parking, sewage overflow and traffic on Vikas Marg. They said the Ghazipur landfill causes foul air and polluted groundwater; landfill-flattening work has slowed. Arya Nagar residents reported dirty or interrupted water supplies, while residents raised concerns about stray cattle and mobile and chain-snatching.
