Vijayawada Flood Wall Heightening Works Remain Unstarted

Indiatimes · · Infrastructure

Four months after Vijayawada Municipal Corporation approval, work to raise a 420-metre flood wall by 1.5 metres at Ramalingeswara Nagar has yet to begin.

Key facts

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation approved raising the flood protection wall at Ramalingeswara Nagar, beside the Krishna River, four months before the October 16, 2025 report; work had not begun. The proposed height increase is 1.5 metres along a 420-metre stretch.

The state built an approximately 3.5-km retaining wall downstream of Prakasam Barrage to protect low-lying Krishna Lanka, Ranigarithota, Ramalingeswara Nagar, Yanamalakuduru and other areas. Designed by the irrigation department for up to 10.50 lakh cusecs, matching the highest Krishna River flood recorded at Prakasam Barrage in 2009, the wall was overtopped in 2024 when the barrage received 11.40 lakh cusecs. Floodwater submerged Ramalingeswara Nagar and neighbouring areas for days, disrupting normal life.
