Odisha govt asks BMC, BDA to rehabilitate 600 families from Niladri Vihar

Odisha government directs Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and Development Authority to rehabilitate approximately 600 families from Niladri Vihar transit homes to affordable housing or slum redevelopment projects.

Key facts

State government has asked Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) to rehabilitate around 600 families residing in transit homes in Niladri Vihar to affordable housing projects or in-situ slum redevelopment (ISSR) projects. Housing and Urban Development department issued guidelines for smooth relocation. Both agencies have information on 639 families in transit houses and have been asked to conduct fresh joint enumeration to determine exact number and eligibility. Families who have deposited partial beneficiary contribution but cannot pay balance will be assisted to avail bank loans. Families cannot stay in transit houses beyond six months. Last year, state government rehabilitated about 455 families from Niladri Vihar transit shelters to Nilamadhab Niwas affordable housing project. Nilamadhab Niwas includes about 1,200 dwelling units with approximately 960 units completed and handed to BDA for allotment. Government recently asked BDA to file cancellation proposal for ISSR project with 400 dwelling units at VSS Nagar that allegedly failed to commence.
