Supreme Court warns against non-compliance in Unitech project completion

The Supreme Court warned state authorities against non-compliance with its orders and creating hurdles in completing stalled Unitech housing projects across multiple states.
Key facts
Supreme Court bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan fixed priority hearing schedule for Unitech matters and warned state development authorities including Noida authority, Greater Noida authority, and Haryana town and country planning department against non-compliance.
Court stated: "We will take a serious view if it is found that there is non-compliance of earlier orders of the court by state authorities. We will also not tolerate anyone creating hurdles in completion of these projects."
Bench directed authorities to ensure compliance with earlier court orders granting permission to Unitech board to sell non-used inventory for generating funds to complete stalled projects.
On January 16 last year, court granted exemption from RERA registration for Unitech housing projects in seven states to facilitate loan disbursal to homebuyers. Court issued notices to banks and financial institutions which declared homebuyer loan accounts as NPAs due to project delays.
Court directed Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board chairperson to grant environmental clearances to Unitech projects at Noida and asked Noida authority CEO to grant approval for three projects, with unresolved issues to be raised before committee headed by former Supreme Court Justice A M Sapre.
