Nature lovers halt tree felling at Tidke Colony Nashik

Nashik residents stopped municipal tree felling at Tidke Colony after 40 of 114 trees were cut for bridge construction.

Nature lovers in Nashik city on Saturday opposed and stopped tree-felling activity by Nashik Municipal Corporation at Tidke Colony. Of 114 trees, 40 had been felled by contractor before activists intervened. This is the second flashpoint after Tapovan, where NMC proposed felling over 1,700 trees for Sadghugram construction ahead of Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Activist Amit Kulkarni said NMC officials cited alternative plantation as justification. The action came after a Jan 6 NGT order stayed tree felling across Nashik district pending further orders. Previously, trees were felled for STP (sewage treatment plant) setup; residents questioned effectiveness of replacement plantation. NMC stated plantation process is ongoing.

Residents of Milind Nagar near Tidke Colony began voluntarily removing illegal structures on Thursday, ahead of the Nashik Municipal Corporation’s anti-encroachment drive scheduled for Friday, 13 February 2026. The NMC had deferred the drive by a day after residents requested time and promised to dismantle the structures themselves. Any remaining illegal constructions will be removed by civic squads.

The clearance will facilitate a proposed bridge over the Nandini river in Nashik West, estimated to cost ₹19.23 crore. A 24-metre-wide road will extend 100 metres on each side of the bridge. Around 25 houses obstruct the proposed alignment. The project is part of preparations for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela, expected to draw lakhs of pilgrims to Nashik.
