Pay Wards in Tenkasi and Tirunelveli Hospitals Remain Unused

A newly inaugurated 18-bed pay ward in Tenkasi remains unopened, while a ₹1.25 crore ward at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital has been unused for about a year.

Key facts

Fifty-two days after Health Minister Ma Subramanian inaugurated an 18-bed pay ward at Tenkasi Government District Headquarters Hospital on August 24, it remained non-functional. The ward, created by renovating an old building, cost ₹86.4 lakh. It lacked furniture, including patient cots; air-conditioners, televisions and geysers were installed. Joint Director of Health Services Dr Premalatha said it would open within a week.

The health department spent ₹48 lakh on civil works and ₹6 lakh on electrical work. ₹32.4 lakh was paid for furniture to the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation and a co-operative society; some furniture arrived on Wednesday.

A ₹1.25 crore pay ward at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital has also remained unused for about a year. An official said the government had not assessed staffing needs, payment management or integration with insurers’ hospital networks.
