Water quality assessment in Ayad River Basin, Udaipur
India Water Portal · · Regulatory
Groundwater quality in Udaipur's 1207 sq km Ayad River Basin varies west to east, with contamination from fluoride, nitrate and chloride threatening drinking water safety.
Key facts
The Ayad River Basin spans 1207 sq km across five tehsils in Udaipur and Rajsamand districts. The river originates from Gogunda hills, flows 68 km southeast to Vallabh Nagar reservoir. Semi-arid climate: average temperatures 29–42°C summer, 3–19°C winter; average annual rainfall 640 mm (mostly monsoon), evaporation exceeds 600 mm. Terrain hilly, undulating, elevations 500–700 m. Geology: Archaean to Upper Proterozoic, crystalline rocks form low-yield aquifers.
Study used data from 41 groundwater monitoring wells (25 in basin, 16 periphery) from Ground Water Department, Central Ground Water Board, and 2022–2023 citizen science.
Groundwater Quality Index showed significant spatial variation, declining west to east. Southern and western regions (Ramgiri, Umarda, Hariyab) good quality, GWQI below 50. Eastern and northeastern areas (Bhoyana, Sisarma) poor to unsuitable, GWQI exceeding 100.
Total Dissolved Solids: 434 mg/L (Umarda) to 2545 mg/L (Bhoyana), average 1122 mg/L. Fluoride: averaged 0.56 mg/L, mostly below 1.5 mg/L limit; elevated near Bhoyana and Lakhawali. Nitrate: 4 mg/L (Sukher) to 370 mg/L (Bhoyana), average 63 mg/L; many locations exceeded 45 mg/L permissible limit. Chloride exceeded limits around Kewra and Bhoyana.
For irrigation: groundwater classified "doubtful" in most locations due to high salinity; sodium adsorption ratio values low, suggesting low sodium hazard. Migmatite Complex and Meta-Volcanics-Basics areas showed poor quality; marble phyllite and quartzite areas better quality. Geogenic factors (mineral dissolution from bedrock) contribute to contamination in migmatite areas.
