CRS Allows Kolkata Metro Trains to Switch Tracks at Kavi Subhash

The Commission of Railway Safety has temporarily approved a track-switching arrangement at Kavi Subhash, helping Kolkata Metro maintain 98% operational accuracy on the Blue Line.

Key facts

The Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) has temporarily relaxed a rule requiring one train to clear the tracks between Kavi Subhash and Shahid Khudiram before another could depart Shahid Khudiram. The approval allows all 172 up and down Blue Line trains to reach Kavi Subhash and switch tracks, even while empty trains move in the opposite direction, helping maintain 98% operational accuracy.

Kavi Subhash station has been suspended since July 28, 2025, after cracks were found in the piers supporting its platforms. Empty trains have continued using its crossover because Shahid Khudiram, the replacement southern terminal at Briji or Dhali Bridge, lacks one. Metro experiments terminating 33 services at Tollygunge did not improve frequencies and drew passenger complaints.
