Madurai's widest Dindigul Bypass Road suffers from haphazard parking, encroachments, and poor traffic control despite being a key corridor connecting south and west.

Dindigul By-pass Road is the widest road in Madurai City with a four-way main carriage way and wider service roads on both sides, connecting south with west of the city.

Key problems:

  • Haphazard parking of vehicles
  • Rampant encroachments by roadside shops on service roads and main carriage way
  • Poor traffic regulation
  • Free flow of traffic between Kalavasal junction and Palanganatham is obstructed at every median opening
  • Worst congestion at Ponmeni Main Road - Subramani Pillai Road junction during peak hours
  • School buses, vans, and autorickshaws cause standstills entering narrow Ponmeni Road
  • Five schools located on Ponmeni Main Road add to congestion
  • Unregulated parking including trucks at bus stops
  • Roadside shops eat up carriage way space with customer vehicles parked in front

Residents propose a flyover up to Fatima College or an elongated roundabout similar to Arapalayam.
