VMRDA Pauses Sontyam Land Pooling Pending Vigilance Verification

VMRDA has halted Sontyam’s proposed land pooling after complaints of irregularities and requested an independent Vigilance verification by district authorities.

The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) paused land pooling of 198.3 acres in Sontyam after complaints about ownership disputes and alleged irregularities. Officials said political leaders allegedly tried to create records showing farmers as occupants of government land; reports of industries likely to come up near Sontyam reportedly prompted a rush to acquire land. Leaders were also alleged to have made advance agreements to buy assigned land from farmers.

A notification proposed pooling 309.2 acres in Gidijala, Dibbadipalem and Vemagiripalem; 122.5 acres in Bheemadorapalem; 198.3 acres each in Gorinta and Sontyam; and 250.5 acres in Kovvada. Around 900 acres were initially reported across the villages; VMRDA metropolitan commissioner Tej Bharath said about 800 acres are now being pooled in the four villages where work continues. Revised details, including roads and infrastructure, are expected from the revenue department. Residential layouts are being prepared, with plot lottery and allotment expected in August. Assignees receive 900 square yards per acre; encroachers in possession for over 10 years receive 450 square yards per acre.
