Overbridge Access Problems Keep Buses Away From Sholavandan Bus Stand
The New Indian Express · · Infrastructure
Residents want more buses to serve Sholavandan’s new bus stand, but narrow, difficult access beneath the railway overbridge leads many services to bypass it.
Key facts
Residents of Sholavandan have urged officials to route more buses through the new bus stand beneath the railway overbridge. Buses crossing the bridge cannot turn immediately right onto the service road, so many stop nearly 2 km away on Sholavandan–Pallapatti Road.
The overbridge, built for ₹40 crore, reopened in 2021. The bus stand, built for ₹2 crore, opened in September 2025 after construction was completed in 2023. Routes 4A (Sholavandan–Thirumangalam) and 28A (Sholavandan–Madurai city) use it throughout the day, but buses from Nilakottai, Dindigul and Vadipatti, as well as private buses, often skip it.
TNSTC said the one-way entrance requires buses to slow down and manoeuvre carefully; another entrance is narrowed by an electricity pole. The Town Panchayat has asked TANGEDCO to relocate the pole, but officials cited risks of line sagging and restrictions on moving it near homes. Alternative locations to reroute the line are being identified.
