Tiruppur Plans ₹57.84 Crore Bio-CNG Plant and Regional Waste Facility

Tiruppur plans a 200-tonne-a-day bio-CNG plant at Palladam and a joint waste-to-energy facility with Coimbatore within two years.
Key facts
Tiruppur District Collector Manish Narnaware told the National Green Tribunal’s Southern Zone that a ₹57.84-crore bio-CNG plant, processing 200 tonnes of waste daily, is proposed at Palladam under a public-private partnership. A regional waste-to-energy plant is planned jointly with Coimbatore Corporation within two years.
Dumping in abandoned quarries at Pongupalayam, Tiruppur North Taluk, has stopped; unsegregated waste was stabilised with protective soil cover. The city’s 60 wards generate nearly 574 tonnes of municipal waste daily. Existing treatment includes 24 micro-composting centres, a 50-tonne-a-day material recovery facility and a 15-tonne-a-day bio-methanisation plant. Authorised handlers and piggeries receive 15 tonnes of poultry waste and 10 tonnes of fish and hotel waste daily; two bulk generators reprocess 75 tonnes daily.
Three 150-tonne-a-day recovery facilities at 15-Velampalayam, Kovilvazhi and Sundamedu were tendered for commissioning within 2–3 months. A feasibility report from Anna University’s Centre of Environmental Studies will inform a project report on quarry waste bio-mining and leachate treatment. Relocating legacy waste is presently considered unfeasible.
