The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) took up the Safilguda mini tank bund modernisation project at an estimated cost of Rs 48 lakh, launching works in December 2024. The project involves five departments: GHMC, HMDA, Irrigation, HMWSSB and Revenue.

GHMC has completed constructing walls around the lake, building a baby pond, installing borewells and putting up paintings. HMDA has made little progress: has not cleared horseweed choking the lake, repaired railings along the bund, or replaced soil at the open gym. Multiple letters have been sent to HMDA for sewage diversion with no effective action.

Malkajgiri corporator Shravan Kumar attributed delays to lack of coordination between departments. Officials are coordinating to remove horseweed and spray chemicals using drones to check mosquito breeding. Rs 2 crore has been requested for repairs to the water treatment plant. Corporator assured pending works would be completed on priority.

The Safilguda lake was modernised in 2000 and developed as a mini tank bund for recreation. It has since suffered from lack of maintenance, pollution and deterioration. Residents report foul smell, broken facilities and encroaching weeds. Some residential buildings have illegally connected sewage outlets directly into the lake, worsening conditions.
